The research that I did on the various different photographers and artists for each element and for photo genre influenced my work as I was able to focus closely on their style and how they create the composition within their images. For most of my formal element shoots, I edited them into black and white to enhance the formal elements within the images and also because most of the photographers that I was inspired by shot their images in black and white film. For example, my work on line was somewhat influenced by the work of Laszlo Maholy-Nagy in the fact that I put most of my line images into black and white to accentuate the lines within the images and show the strong formal element in all of the images.
Throughout component 1, I have developed many technical skills that have impacted my work in a positive way and have enhanced my photography throughout component 1. For example, during the shooting time for movement, landscape and portrait, I began to learn about the different aperture settings, shutter speed settings and ISO settings to be able to take the best photos that I can. For example, when taking landscape images, I had to ensure that my settings were on a higher aperture such as F22 to make sure that both the foreground and the background were both in focus. In movement, I had to ensure that I had a good knowledge of shutter speed settings so that I could capture the movement in the image. Through portraiture, I have been able to learn about studio lighting and where to place the lights to create shadows or no shadows. I also know when to use softboxes to create a softer light. I have also learnt about the triangular composition and rule of thirds that have helped me in my work, especially in landscape and portraiture.
I feel that the way I take photographs has definitely changed and because of this, my images have improved significantly. For example, before learning about things like triangular composition and rule of thirds, I did not apply these compositional ideas to my photography and my images were not interesting and clearly did not follow these compositional setups. However, after learning about these compositional setups I was able to apply them to my photography and create more interesting images. Additionally to this, I am also able to experiment with angles in photography, which was brought about when researching the formal element of 'line' and the work of Laszlo Moholy Nagy inspired me to take pictures both at low angles and high angles. Through completing component 1, I have been able to experiment with photography and gradually improve on my images. Additionally to this, I have demonstrated my ability to experiment through the use of Photoshop. I have been able to experiment using the curves, levels, black and white, contrast, saturation and layering. Using the black and white tool to enhance the tone, form and shape within the images I have taken has helped me to accentuate those particular formal elements within my images. Layering images is something that I recently learned when completing my landscape project but is my favourite tool to use during photoshop as I was able to create some interesting images. An example of a physical experiment is the use of a slow shutter speed and torches for an experiment with colour, with putting different clear coloured plastic over our phone torches to create different lights in the image.
I feel as though throughout component 1, my work has developed into a particular direction, that direction being more compositional than abstract. In my work at the beginning, I experimented with more abstract angles within my work, especially when exploring the formal element of 'line' as I tried to recreate the angles used by the artists from my artist research. Moving forward into my work, I did not experiment with angles but decided to implement a compositional direction to my work and using compositional setups such as the rule of thirds. I also feel as though I have edited most of my images into black and white and this is a style I have continued throughout many of my formal elements experimentation, as this is a style of photography that I am interested in and also is a style of photography that accentuates the formal element within the images.
I feel as though, within my work, I was most successful in my photo genre photography as this is a type of photography that I am most interested in, especially landscape photography. I also felt that photo genre photography allowed me to be more experimental but also to improve on my manual photography skills. Landscape photography was something I feel that I was more successful on as I was able to revisit and refine my work and develop my ideas of both natural landscape and urban landscape. However, I feel as though I was least successful on some of my formal element shoots such as texture and pattern and shape. I felt as though I could have improved on these shoots by refining my work and editing them further in Photoshop. This would have allowed me to have a better variety of images to add to my portfolios but also to improve on my formal element shoots.
Comparative Images
This is an example of an image that I recreated in the style of a photographer. This particular photo was taken from an independent shoot for 'shape' and I aimed to relate it to the style of Irving Penn. a lot of his images focus on still life and fruit images. The particular image that I decided to copy was an image of a pear. Although the image of the pear is a lot more contrasted, I feel as though my image of the apple still relates to his style as there are shadows present similar to the first image.
These are some of the images that I recreated in the style of Nick Waplington, more specifically his 'living room' series. I feel as though I did capture images in Waplington's style as I used my camera to capture the everyday lives of my families over the christmas period for 'documentary'. A lot of his images capture the everyday lives of families in his own home. This is something that I aimed to follow as I felt it was a good way to present documentary as a photo genre.
