Landscape:
Derived from The
Dutch word 'landschap' meaning "region, tract of land”.
The
first recorded use of landscape was in 1598, as a painters' term when Dutch
artists
were pioneering the landscape genre.
It was used in the artistic sense by the
English to describe "a picture depicting scenery on
land."

Stephen Shore
Stephen Shore is an American photographer known for his images of banal scenes and objects in the United States, and for his pioneering use of colour in art photography. Shore then embarked on a series of cross-country trips, making "on the road" photographs of American and Canadian landscapes. In 1972, he made the journey from Manhattan to Amarillo, Texas, that provoked his interest in color photography. Viewing the streets and towns he passed through, he conceived the idea to photograph them in color, first using 35 mm hand-held camera and then a 4x5" view camera before finally settling on the 8x10 format.

Additional Shoot (22/01/2017)
For this shoot, I decided to focus on urban landscape, rather than natural landscape, which I focused on in my first shoot. To do this, I took my pictures in Harlow Town Centre.

Images that require improvement:
There were two images that I selected that needed improvement for a variety of reasons. The first image that I selected I decided needed improvement because I felt as though the image wasn't in focus as much as I would have liked, due to the fact that it is landscape and a good landscape image requires all aspects of the image to be in focus. The foreground (leaves) were in focus but the stream (background) was not. Additionally to this, I feel as though the twigs around it are blocking the view of the stream and therefore the image becomes crowded, which is something I didn't want in my landscape images. If I was to improve on this image, I would try to move the camera angle so that the twigs were not in the image, or try to physically move them out of the image myself to get the best image possible.
The second image I selected that needed improvement because I tried to apply the rule of thirds to this image, but the angle at which I took it meant that the rule of thirds did not work. If I was to improve on this image, I would take the picture at another angle, or I would move to another location that the rule of thirds would apply well to, as I feel that looking back on this image, it was not the right location to apply rule of thirds to.
AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.
The main idea that I had and the main reason for creating landscape images was that I felt that throughout Harlow and within my own home and environment, there are various different places that would act as good landscapes for my images. Some are more traditional and others are presented in a much more abstract way, and I felt I was going to be able to capture this well using the natural light and my manual camera settings. I tried to relate some of my images to my artist research however I think I could develop on this further as looking back, I could have used varying camera settings to improve on my work significantly.
The images that I retrieved from my time exploring Harlow and exploring my own enviroment turned out well and I felt that overall, I captured the aspect of landscape well. However, due to some of the locations and the way at which my camera was positioned, there were certain aspects of my work that I felt could have been improved upon.
With reference to the Best selected images...
The first image that I took that includes the war memorial statue was taken just outside my house and within this image, I tried to include as much of the surroundings as possible around the war memorial statue as I felt that this would make a good landscape image. My camera settings were altered so that I would get a wide depth of field and that all aspects of the image would be in focus.
The image of the tree was taken a short walk from my house, and I feel that it is one of my best images from this shoot due to the fact that I was able to capture the colour within the landscape. Additionally to this, I feel as though it captures a contrast of colour between the two opposite sides of the road. I feel that with editing in photoshop, I will be able to improve on this image even further.
The image of the graveyard and building in the background I feel is one of my best images from this shoot as it shows a clear contrast between structural landscape and natural landscape. I tried to apply theory to this image but I do not own a tripod, so I balanced this picture on a wall surrounding the graveyard to try and get the best image possible. I feel that editing this image into a black and white, or one with little saturation, it could work nicely for landscape and for my portfolio.
The two images that I chose as my images that needed improvement were images that I felt that I could take again and work on the composition of the image. I would change the angle of the images to apply the rule of thirds or triangular composition to my images and this would improve on them significantly.
AO2: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.
For all of the above images, I used a CANON EOS 1300D. I used my camera in manual mode with a high aperture to create a wide depth of field so that all aspects of the images are in focus. However, due to not having a tripod at home I wasn't able to use a tripod for all of the images but I did try to balance my camera on top of objects and walls to try to apply the theory to the images.
In order to improve on the images that I took, I decided to import them into Photoshop in order to enhance them and improve on their composition and the way that they have been shot. In order to do this, I decided to put them into black and white in order to accentuate the contrast and tone within the image. For some of the images, I did not use black and white as I felt this may ruin the quality of the images, so for these images I tried my best to adapt the saturation and brightness of the images.
The screen grabs that I have selected show how I used Photoshop to create a high contrast black and white image. To do use this, I used the Curves tool and the Black and White tool, gradually adjusting the colour sliders to get the clear contrast effect. With some of the images, I chose to try out editing in colour, adjusting the contrast and brightness of the image.

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.
The artist research that I did was extremely helpful in the fact that I was able to gain an understanding of the different artists and their different styles. Knowing about when they were born and where they were born helps me to interpret their work and understand what they were thinking when they took a certain image. Researching images that they have created helps me to try and recreate these images and then shooting my own images in their style. For example, my research on Stephen Shore and researching the images of him helped me to choose to take photos of everyday places in Harlow. Additionally to this, I was able to get a better understanding of landscape and how different some places in Harlow are. However, I feel as though I did not relate enough to my research and did not take enough pictures in this style. If I was to improve on this, I would revisit the images from the research and try to recreate them as closely as possible.
AO4:Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
Overall, I think that I have produced a good series of images inspired by my research and image bank of landscape... The final images produced were changed by developing the contrast and converting them into black and white images and some by changing the brightness and contrast of the colour of an image. I think if I was to improve on this, I would try and take photographs that relate more to the artist, as looking back I feel as though I have not fully captured the style of both photographers and I only have images that loosely reflect his style in some way.

I decided to edit all my landscape pictures into black and white as I feel it gives the image a mysterious feel to the images and creates tone and form within the images. Additionally to this, I decided to capture a mixture of natural landscape and urban landscape and in some cases, the two have come together in one image. For example, the picture of the graveyard with the corporate building in the background blends the idea of natural and urban landscape photography, and also implies that the building doesn't belong in the image or doesn't fit the landscape around it.
For these images, I decided to experiment in Photoshop with layering different landscape images together to create one abstract landscape image. All of these images I took for landscape, but I thought that they may look more interesting if I layered them, and for this I took inspiration from my image bank of the layered documentary images.
